What Does Black Mold Look Like? You can often distinguish black mold from other types of mold or fungus by its slimy, dark-greenish color. It requires ample moisture to grow and thrive, so you will probably also notice signs of water damage around where it is located.
-
Is Black Mold Dangerous?Certain strands of black mold – Stachybotrys chartarum – can cause health problems if inhaled or ingested, especially for people with allergies, weakened immune systems, or respiratory issues. Not all types of black mold are dangerous. However, you might not be able to differentiate between one black mold and the next without laboratory testing. The safer choice is to always schedule a mold removal and remediation service whenever you spot mold in your house.

My Water Heater Is Leaking — What Do I Do?If it is safe to do so and you know how to do it correctly, shut off the water supply to your water heater. Next, turn off the power supply to the water heater. Both of these steps can help prevent further leaks and damage to the water heater. You might always want to loosen the drain valve and start collecting water in a bucket, ensuring no more leaks out. Call a professional to get the entire water heater inspected and repaired.

I Have Water in My Crawlspace — What Do I Do?Water in a crawlspace can harbor mold growth, make a cozy home for pests, and spike your water utility bills if it is caused by a leak. It can be remedied in some cases with a sump pump, vapor barriers, and dehumidifiers. Our pros can help decide the best restoration method for your situation.

My Washing Machine/Dishwasher Is Leaking — What Do I Do?Many washing machine and dishwasher leaks are caused by a loose hose clamp near where the unit drains. Double-check this clamp is tightened all the way. If that does not solve the problem, you may need to speak with an appliance repair specialist.

I Had a Fire on the Stove, I Have Smoke Damage and My House Smells — What Do I Do?Burning food can stink up your entire home at best and cause smoke damage at worst. Don’t worry, we can help! If the fire has created smoke damage, give us a call and we will come pack up all the contents, take them back to our shop to remove the smoke smell using our ozone machine and bring them back smelling fresh and smoke-free. We can also help replace any damaged appliances and repaint if necessary. If you burned food while cooking and you don’t have any smoke damage but now your whole house smells, start by opening up the windows to let fresh air flow in. After about 30 minutes, close the windows again. Next, bring a pot full of lemon slices and water to a slow boil. You can also place a small amount of cinnamon sticks or vanilla extract onto disposable foil that you bake in the oven at 300 degrees for 60 minutes.
-
My Toilet Overflowed — What Do I Do?As quickly as you can, locate the hand-crank valve behind or next to your toilet and shut it off. The valve is usually silver and shaped like an oval. If you cannot locate the valve, open the top of the toilet and manipulate the float so it stops letting water flow into the tank. Use towels or a mop to start to soak up any water that did overflow, minimizing water damage to your flooring. When the water has stopped flowing and you have taken the first steps to clean up the mess, you should call a plumber to see what is wrong with the toilet. If more than a couple inches of water has built up or you notice the water has leaked into the floor or is coming through the ceiling downstairs, call a professional to get it inspected right away.

What Is HEPA Cleaning? Does Magic Valley Restoration & Construction Do It?Yes! HEPA cleaning is most commonly used to remove mold from surfaces and in the air. HEPA filters are specialized air filters that have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and that can filter air contaminants only a few microns wide. If mold has been found in your home, we would start by having a hygienist come and measure the mold count in the home. We would then use our HEPA vacuum to clean all hard and soft surfaces to remove the mold. Once that is done, we use our Air Scrubbers to remove the mold from the air. Then, the hygienist will come back to measure the air again to verify and approve the mold is gone. As part of our air quality improvement services, we typically recommend allowing our team to replace your air filters with HEPA filters. Or, we can clean preexisting HEPA filters to improve their efficiency.
